Camping is not only the cheapest way of staying in Spitsbergen - in addition, no other kind of accomodation will provide an equally intensive experience of nature. And isn´t this a main reason for you to come to Spitsbergen ?
Fjord, tundra and wildlife are our immediate neighbour nature - right in front of the tent. And no other accomodation in Longyearbyen can compete with our wide scenic view over much of Icefjord.

Longyearbyen Camping was founded, because after the opening of the airport, wild camping in Longyearbyen showed a rapid growth - including also less pleasant remains, which do not decay for decades in the arctic climate.
With Longyearbyen Camping, the state provided a more orderly possibility for camping tourism with all basic facilities, and at the same time, a ban on camping elsewhere in the area of Longyearbyen was introduced. Details: see also » Camping in Spitsbergen.
Since 1985, Longyearbyen Camping is equipped with a pleasant » service building, which is open during the » season. Overnight stay figures vary widely from year to year and have been anything between 1500 to 3400 annually during the last years, with guests from 15-30 countries. In other words: a small, cosy campsite with the atmosphere of a big international family on most days.
From 1998 to 2007, Spitsbergen Tours, also the first tour operator registered in Spitsbergen, had leased the campsite. In 2007, it was put on sale by the former owner due to necessary major refurbishment investments, and Michelle van Dijk (at that time working for Spitsbergen Tours) and Andreas Umbreit (owner of Spitsbergen Tours) took the step of buying Longyearbyen Camping, running it jointly since then. The necessary major investment of 2007, a new and expensive freshwater pipe to, and a new sewage pipe from the campsite, are finally frost-protected, thus allowing us to extend the season in the summer period and even to offer an opening in spring (usually April to early May).
