Spring Season and Climate

End of March: nights are still fairly dark ...
but get rapidly shorter, often with phantastic natural light shows above Icefjord. Service building from some distance, with some snow drifting around it.

From end of March onwards, nights get progressively shorter and soon, and there is at least some dawn all night through. Quite soon, around April 20th, even the period of midnight sun starts. For full 4 months, the sun never sets from then onwards, meaning daylight all around the clock. However, all the way into sometimes even early June, conditions may still be wintry, certainly in April and early May. So, though we have open, the spring season is recommendable only for professionally equipped campers with stormproof winter gear, also if you "just" want to camp on Longyearbyen Camping.

Since 2008, we open also in spring, usually from early April to early May. During the following main snow melt, we keep normally closed and open again for the summer season around mid-June. As a test, we had continuously open in 2011 from beginning of April to mid-September.

Contrary to the last years, Longyearbyen Camping will stay closed during spring 2012 and opens in early June for the summer season. Informations for campers outside our summer season: » Question 20 in FAQ - Frequently asked Questions.

April is the absolute peak tourism season of the year in Longyearbyen, mainly because of lots of mostly Norwegian snowmobile drivers, a few ski and dogsledge tourists, but also North Pole travellers sitting in Longyearbyen and waiting for their flights to the North Pole base, and at the end of April the numerous participants of the Svalbard Skimarathon (2012: Saturday April 28th, see further informations further down). Especially full are the weekends, Easter and May 1st. So in this period, it is not unusual, that all other accomodations in Longyearbyen can be completely booked long in advance.

In tent, snowcave, igloo - or inside the service building:
For those who want to be outside the settlement and close to nature, Longyearbyen Camping is an option also in spring:

  • With your own tent: a true experience, requiring top quality winter equipment for arctic conditions, and appropriate winter experience.
  • Sleeping inside the service building on insulation mats in sleepingbags, thus not having to bother about weather conditions outside for the night.
  • Your own snowcave or igloo on the campsite (see further down) !

Special additional opening and booking conditions apply for the spring season:

Due to higher costs, especially for heating, higher prices apply for the spring season. See Öffnet einen internen Link im aktuellen FensterServices and Prices.
Campsite guests are themselves responsible for their safety. Namely, the campsite is not guarded or otherwise protected against polarbear visits. Contrary to summer, it is more likely in spring that polar bears may appear in the area, and in the white surroundings, they are not as obvious as in summer. However, polar bears are no daily sight in the area of Longyearbyen also in spring.
See also the passage on "Safety" in the Öffnet einen internen Link im aktuellen FensterFrequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
Guests intending to actually camp
, have to take their own precautions against possible polar bear encounters during their sleeping period - securing the tent with an alarm system and being properly armed. At the same time, it has to be made sure by the camper that these defensive measures cannot harm other persons - being close to Longyearbyen, for instance also children may come onto the campground. It is advised to make sure that alarm system and firearms are secured especially in periods when the tent is unattended.
Guests sleeping in the service building have to make sure that their sleeping equipment is packed away from 08:00 to 22:00, so that the service building can be normally used by all guests. Sleeping in the service building is possible only upon prior confirmed registration, as the capacity here is limited to maximally 10 persons.
A part of the service building is used for storage of equipment over the winter. Therefore, space inside is more limited than in summer.
Frost damages to the infrastructure (pipes, etc.) may cause improvisations or restrictions.

The period of midnightsun begins around April 22nd.
Since April 2010, we issue our popular "Longyearbyen Camping Arctic Naked-bathing Certificate" also in a special winter version ! Look for more infos in on this page a bit further down.

Climate in April and May

As an exception, temperatures can drop to below -25 C, especially in the first half of April. Normally, and especially in the second part of April, temperatures are in the area of -20 to -5 C. However, also melting due to some plus centigrades or even some rain may occur as the other extreme. In case of melting, water may be standing on the ground, also in the snow. However, main attention should be given to the possibility of strong wind or even storm, which multiplies not only the effect of cold, but challenges also the camping equipment. Wind stability of tent, a shape which minimizes the accumulation of snow on the tent (optimal: cupolar design, geodetic) and the possibility of making the tent tight against intruding fine drifting snow can be essential, if you want to use a tent also on Longyearbyen Camping in spring.
We do not rent out winter gear.

Snow melt: Somewhen between late April and second part of May, the main snowmelt starts, which sometimes sets a sudden end to winter activities out in the terrain, and which creates extensive ponds on the campground tundra. However, an old beach wall on the campsite terrain stays above the wetness, offering enough dry ground for the few tents in that period. Rubber boots might be useful in that period.

In May, both mild temperatures up to +10°C can occur especially in the later part of the month, but also plunges down to -15°C have to be anticipated. With the sun above the horizon all around the clock, temperature differences between day and "night" are modest.

Your own Snowcave or Igloo

Normally, a huge snowdrift builds up on the campsite towards the airport - tempting to be used for digging snowcaves !
Advantage: Snow insulates surprisingly well: while possibly having extremes of below -25C and snowstorm outside, a well-constructed snowcave may not be colder than -6 C and without any icy draught or intruding lots of driftsnow.
You can rent the necessary equipment (spades, axes, snowsaws) from us, but the building work is up to you. The snow is usually quite solid, so it will take a couple of hours to make a good snowcave, but this work keeps you warm and afterwards you have your own home with personal touch.
Alternatively, you can also build an igloo, which is more demanding, or combine cave and igloo.
We can provide not only the tools, but also pallets, planks and insulation mats for additional comfort inside, and for building, you may want to use water from our tab for hardening (icing) and planks as supports under construction work of an igloo.
Combine your creativity (but keep an eye onto the statics, too) with the prospect of making your own sheltered winter home !

Construction and use of igloo or snwocave solely at your own risk - the campsite does not take any responsibility for safety, injuries, damages or losses. We advise to take precautions against collapse of snowcaves caused by persons, animals or vehicles passing over their roof.

Svalbard Skimaraton (Saturday, April 30th, 2011)

The Svalbard Skimaraton is organised by the local sports club Svalbard Turn. Originally a local competition, it attracts increasingly international participants, being the northernmost regular ski marathon in the world. 2009, a total of 450 persons participated in the various classes (racing and tour for the full marathon, also semimarathon). Even though Longyearbyen is quite full at that time also by other tourists, the ski marathon can hardly be moved to a different period, as late April is usually the best compromise: normally still wintry conditions, but usually not extremely cold anymore. However, strong demand for accomodation has to be expected in that period, so early booking is highly recommendable, also for the campingsite.

Longyearbyen Camping Arctic Naked-bathing Certificate

When we started issueing our certificate in summer 2008, we had no idea about how popular it would become. One of the consequences was the introduction of its winter version since 2010 for the tough ones wanting to do it in our late winter season.
Water temperatures in April: around -1 C to 0 C. See beach in spring on picture further down. Bathing entirely at own risk.
